Here you will find a description of the MyBB versioning scheme and release cycle as well as a listing of all MyBB versions released to date.

Versioning System

MyBB uses a 3-number versioning system, MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH.

The first — major — number is incremented when there is a significant change in MyBB's features, behavior, and compatibility.

The second — minor — number indicates new features and potential breaking changes for extensions.

The third — patch — number is incremented every time a security or maintenance update is released. These releases usually will not contain new features, but can be crucial to the security and stability of your forum.

Whatever the version number is, MyBB always urges users to upgrade to the latest version for the highest security of MyBB installations. Even minor patches that seem insignificant could protect from potentially critical security vulnerabilities.

Release Cycle

Series Releases

New series increment the major or minor version number. Usually these will have new features and changes to the database schema, and therefore may break existing forum customizations, such as themes and plugins. They may also contain security vulnerability patches and bug fixes.

In the past, they were called major releases, and odd minor numbers indicated development-only releases.

Patch Releases

The most common patch releases introduce small enhancements, and are produced in response to bug reports and security problems. Customizations (plugins, themes, etc.) generally are compatible across releases within given series.

Security Releases appear to fix any known security holes. Upgrading should be completed as soon as possible, otherwise forum security could be compromised.

Maintenance Releases fix bugs and contain other stability or performance improvements. Upgrading is not as immediately necessary with simple maintenance releases as it is with security releases, but it is recommended and encouraged to upgrade as soon as it is convenient.
